As nobody ever reads a "Preface," an author can, if he please, make use of that hay-mow in which to stick as many little lots of sharp points, laudations, and praises of himself and his useful "work " as he thinks the generous public will stand, but at the same time quite confident they will never be found to appear in judgment against him when on trial for his alleged vanity.
Besides, he can steal and plagiarize to his heart's content, from all his brilliant neighbors, and only give them credit in his " preface.'' The wily critic will soon discover the brilliant and useful extracts (showing the author's good sense) uncredited, and will come down on him like a buzzard on a mourning dove, and charge him before all the world with the plagiarism.
This is just what was expected. When the sharp critic has worked up the whole country into a savage and unrelenting disgust, and made things ripe to send the guilty culprit into pluto or oblivion, he turns the tables on his enemy by triumphantly referring to his "preface." There due credit is given to all. The criminal is acquitted in a blaze of glory. He has the public sympathy as a martyr. The just and generous public knew all the time he was not a common thief; and, priding themselves on their sound sagacity, they summarily squelch the crest-fallen critic, and — buy the book.
In this work the writer acknowledges his indebtedness to the late Leonard Case, whose modesty and merit were the rivals of his life; the Chicago Field, the London Field, the British Encyclopedia and the Bible.
From all these he has made such drafts as he felt sure the great public would accept, and — pay at sight — overlooking errors and applauding facts and truths, with charity and without malice.
He has endeavored to make the art of hunting and angling appear honorable and worthy of the true sportsman; to aid the beginner in shortening his path to success ; to interest and assist the more experienced, and to give, in short, the best experience of a life passionately devoted to these sports.
Finally, if it be admitted that he has been the means of imparting some profitable suggestions and one pleasurable emotion to the heartfelt sportsman, all he hoped for has been accomplished by

Living either full or part time in a recreational vehicle has been an alternative lifestyle in North America since the 1920s. By the 1930s, Wally Byam's Airstream company could not keep up with the demand for his self-contained "house trailers." And today, "RVing" has become so widespread that, for perhaps two million retired North Americans, home is a recreational vehicle. In this book, anthropologists Dorothy and David Counts tell the story of their research living the life of RVing seniors in trailer parks, "boondocking" sites on government land, laundromats, and other meeting places across the continent.

The authors convincingly convey the feel of various RV lifestyles (boondocking, full timing, flea marketing and so on). But they also raise broad questions. Are there parallels to be made between the RVers of North America and the gypsies of Europe? Is there an association between RVing and socio-economic status? Why would people sell their homes and live on the road as nomads? The answers come from RVers who argue persuasively that they experience a greater sense of community and fewer of the emotional problems common to old age than do many who have chosen other forms of retirement living.

This edition expands the original 1996 text, including an extended section on working RVers and on the CARE center (Continued Assistance for Retired Escapees) in Livingston, TX. The CARE center is a unique and innovative experiment that provides inexpensive assisted living and adult daycare for RVers who must hang up their keys because of age or infirmity, but who want to continue their participation in the RVing community.

A new appendix (Appendix 5) offers information, resources and suggestions for people who want to try serious RVing but need help getting started. The authors include a list of websites providing resources and information for both experienced and novice RVers. The list includes sources for RVing families, single RVers, those interested in a particular kind of RVing style ("boondockers," for example), people who want to rent an RV, organizations for RVers with special interests (former military, Canadians, etc.). There is updated information on Canadian provincial residence rules defining eligibility for provincial medical care programs.

There are two basic ways to win the pitcher versus hitter war: • Overpower the hitter (like Justin Verlander) • Fool the hitter (like Barry Zito). The first requires dominating stuff, generally velocity. (Verlander’s average fastball in 2012 was 94.3 mph. He also showcased a superb curveball.) And, it requires a fair amount of control to go with the overpowering velocity. Not many pitchers have that kind of ability, even in the major leagues. At lower levels, very few pitchers have the kind of overpowering stuff to rely just on that to get hitters out throughout a game. Those who do have electric stuff can dominate hitters. They are the fortunate ones, but not everyone has this advantage. For them, and for the overpowering pitchers at higher levels, something more than great stuff is required. So, in general, we need a more strategic, mental approach to get hitters out consistently. Pitching is a complex endeavor—both physical and mental. While there are many views on how to succeed as a pitcher, there are several principles that lead to success on the mound. Among these are the following: There is a limited number of things you can do with a ball: give it speed, give it direction, impart spin, and select an orientation of the seams. You can also combine pitches in different sequences and combinations. Otherwise, there is nothing you can to the ball. Every other factor that you can control is mental, and therefore absolutely essential to success. You cannot succeed consistently on the hill without having a plan in mind beforehand. So, if you prepare well, with solid mechanics, you can win each battle with hitters. The objective on the mound is getting outs. There is a strategy to doing this and it relies upon a thoughtful approach that considers your abilities and the situation. If you combine great physical preparation with a sound mental approach, you greatly increase your chances to get those outs, succeed on the hill, and give your team the best opportunity to win games. There are many books on baseball, a few of them about pitching. But, there are very few good books on the art and strategy: the tactics of pitching—specifically, books dealing with how to throw specific pitches, why they do what they do, when to throw them, to what locations, and how to set up hitters. There are few books that help pitchers “pitch” a good game—the subtleties of how to throw pitches and how to formulate game plans for pitching.
